Jet-lagged wandering through Tokyo streets easily evokes vibes of Lost In Translation, as I seek fresh sashimi and classic Lawson egg salad sandwiches favored by Anthony Bourdain. This spring, I traveled to Japan with a renowned watchmaker, and the trip blended movie-like leisure and warm homely comfort.

Following Suntory’s classic slogan, I explored local culture with casual snacks and drinks, eager to verify the fame of Japanese men’s fashion in my reliable Blundstone boots.
Kapital fully lives up to its global reputation. Founded in the 1980s and now run by founder’s son Kiro Hirata, its tiny Ginza store features iconic yellow smiley logos and an upside-down bicycle sign, boasting rich unique charm despite its small size. No photos are allowed inside, where elaborate fabrics and bold color designs show extraordinary fashion creativity, perfectly merging premium denim craftsmanship and runway-level styling.

Surrounded by Tokyo’s bustling neon lights and lively hustle, this hidden boutique serves as a peaceful retreat. Based in Okayama, Kapital reinvents traditional Japanese denim with patchwork designs, asymmetrical cuts, military and American vintage elements, forming highly recognizable styles.

While Japan is fond of classic American retro outfits, Kapital delivers brand-new denim aesthetics, launching hundreds of new styles yearly. Its Century Denim wins wide popularity, standing side by side with top Japanese menswear brands like Visvim and The Real McCoy’s. LVMH-backed L Catterton took its majority shares in 2024, sparking heated discussions among fashion enthusiasts.
Kapital’s online works feature superb tailoring, favored by streetwear lovers. You can shop its collections on MR. PORTER if you cannot travel to Tokyo.
After enjoying distinctive fashion culture, I relaxed at a local cash-only beer bar with icy Asahi beer. Though most Kapital designs do not suit my daily style, it remains an irreplaceable cult fashion icon. I have marked its Ginza store on my map, looking forward to revisiting Tokyo and this trendy hidden gem soon.
